Naples – Where the Soul of Italy Still Lives

Colorful streets of Naples, Italy taken by Photographer Scott Allen Wilson

In a city that was once occupied by various civilizations; that has dealt with epidemics, fascism, organized crime, and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius- we cannot expect anything but a vibrant city with turbulent beauty. The fact that inhabitants of the city are mostly locals, and that the city is not taken over mass tourism made me feel like I was walking through the soul of Italy. In fact, the way that the city lets you experience its spirit and authentic Italian culture makes it possibly my favorite city in Italy. I’m so excited to present my new Naples Collectiona collection that I think beautifully captures this city’s most iconic architecture, and portrays its energetic and raw atmosphere.

If you take a look at my Naples Collection, you may see be surprised to see that not every print portrays movement and chaos, which is all we ever hear about Naples– as Naples is also home to a varied selection of aesthetic architectural beauty. Both the church of San Francesco di Paola, or the Galleria Umberto I are great examples of this. There are so many diverse sites to see though- between the underground tunnels, and with Pompei being really close by – the Archaeological Museum is one of the attractions that I also highly recommend. Hopefully these framed prints of Naples that I’ve created will inspire you to visit this city with open eyes, and an open heart- for it really is an amazing city with a lot of passion and amazing things to offer.

La Grandezza

Naples, Italy

I’ve lived in Italy for nearly 10 years at this point, and I avoided visiting Naples for a long time. All I ever heard was ‘it’s dangerous’,  ‘my friend got mugged’, ‘don’t wear expensive jewelry’, etc. What I found when I arrived, however, was not only unexpected, but Naples turned out to be one of my favorite cities in all of Italy – if not Europe. You should always be careful when you travel – not just in Naples, and it’s never wise to ‘flaunt’ expensive things- especially when you’re going somewhere you don’t know, and don’t know the language. Always travel responsibly, do your research, and have a great time!

Apart from architectural monuments, Naples gave me the opportunity to enjoy wonderful landscape views of the city such as from  La Pedamentina. La Pedamentina is a photo I took while exploring the 414 steps that descend the hill of Vomero District to the center of the city. These stairs allowed me to capture Naples’ eclectic aesthetics, as all the warm colorful buildings adorn the view. The narrow streets surrounding the stairs were an ideal frame for my photo – showing the imperfect beauty of this city. Apart from the magical city views, I got the chance to appreciate Mount Vesuvius rising above the Gulf of Naples – In a city known for its “chaos”, it is also refreshing to portray the beauty of the volcano amidst the nature that surrounds it. The blue and green shades of this landscape resulted in a calm and relaxing print, that I aptly named Vesuvio.

Quartieri Spagnoli

Naples, Italy

If this isn’t your first time reading my blog, you’ll know there’s nothing I enjoy more than trying to get lost when I travel, and the historic center of Naples is simply perfect for that. I know that walking through the narrow streets of Spaccanapoli, or Via Dei Tribunali, filled with thin and crowded buildings can be a bit intimidating, but exploring the different neighborhoods, especially the Spanish quarter, is actually pretty cool. On my last trip I was there for 9 days, and each day I went to a different pizzeria to try to find my favorite one. Ahh…La Vita Napoletana. If you have a local favorite, be sure to share it in the comments below!

I hope this blog has inspired you to check out my Naples Collection! You can go check it out on my store. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, but have otherwise enjoyed what you’ve seen- you can still help me out with some reviews on Google, Facebook and on products in my store.
